Why July is the Only Window
In Amethi, close to 89% of the year's rain falls between June and September. Plant now and the monsoon does the watering while roots take hold. Miss it, and every sapling needs hand-watering through a dry winter and a harsh summer.
Soil at field capacity
Monsoon soil holds moisture near field capacity, so young roots spread without transplant shock. Around 1005 mm of rain a year, most of it now.
90 days to establish
A mid-July planting gets roughly three months of reliable rain and high humidity to build a root system before the dry season arrives.
Nature irrigates for free
Establishing in the monsoon cuts irrigation cost and labour to almost nothing. The only water you carry is for a dry spell between rains.
Dig pits in June, plant in July
Dig 2x2x2 ft pits in dry June so soil weathers and pests are exposed to the sun. Plant once the first steady rains settle the dust, not into raw mud.

Trees That Thrive in an Amethi Monsoon
Survival is what wins BANAS. These species are matched to local alluvial soil, the monsoon window, and (where marked) the sodic (usar) patches common across the tehsil.
Aonla (Amla)
Phyllanthus emblica
Hardy fruit tree that tolerates high-pH sodic patches where other fruits fail.
Strong survival even on reclaimed usar land.

The Amethi Survival Playbook
Planting is easy. Surviving till October is the game. Here are the five things that decide it in our fields.
Risk
Free-ranging cattle and nilgai browse young saplings overnight.
Action
Fit a tree guard or thorn fence on every sapling from day one.
Risk
A 10–15 day break in the monsoon can wilt roots that have not spread yet.
Action
Keep one life-saving watering ready per plant for the gap between rains.

Heavy rain and Gomti flooding waterlog low plots and rot roots.

Plant on a raised mound in low ground; pick Jamun/Arjun where water sits.
